Northam Farm offers a unique blend of beachfront access and Somerset countryside charm. You probably know about the beaches but you may not know that we’re also surrounded by a huge amount of nature in the adjoining fields and wildlife areas. You’ll see sheep and cows grazing in the paddocks, and during quieter times you may be lucky enough to see roe deer. We are regularly visited by foxes and badges, and there are always plenty of rabbits hopping about.
In Spring, usually in the ditch between 5 Acres and the Lakefield area, you may see a stoat or water vole. On still evenings, behind 8 Acres and the Sports Field, you may be lucky enough to see Horseshoe Bats and Barn Owls.
Don’t forget your binoculars!
Look out for green and greater spotted woodpeckers, usually near the crack willow trees which are mainly around the fishing lakes. You will see the tell-tale nest holes. Other birds you may see include Red Kites and Common Buzzard. Witness Murmurations from October to March, with thousands of starling swirling overhead.
And of course there’s much more to see when you head to the beach! At low water you will see large numbers of wading birds including Red Shank, Shelduck, Dunlin, and Curlew.
